AI, Autonomy, and Mobility: The Next Wave of Automotive Disruption

Automotive Intelligence |

Artificial intelligence is no longer just powering infotainment or navigation it’s becoming the core engine driving the future of mobility. From autonomous driving startups to semiconductor innovators and telecom giants, industries are converging around one shared vision: smarter, safer, and self-learning transportation ecosystems.
This week, four major announcements spotlight how rapidly the AI-mobility landscape is evolving and what it means for the global automotive future.

WeRide Eyes $308 Million Hong Kong Listing

WeRide Inc.  China’s autonomous driving pioneer is targeting about US $308 million (HK$ 2.39 billion) through its upcoming Hong Kong share listing. The offering, priced at HK$27.10 per share across 88.3 million shares, marks a milestone in WeRide’s commercial journey from AI research lab to global player in urban autonomy.

The company’s diversified portfolio including robotaxis, robovans, and robobuses  positions it as a leader in China’s push toward smart city integration. The IPO proceeds will fuel R&D and accelerate WeRide’s Level 4 autonomy deployment in Asia and the Middle East, reflecting sustained investor confidence in next-gen mobility platforms.

ON Semiconductor Rides AI Boom Amid Automotive Slowdown

ON Semi exceeded Q3 2025 expectations, posting $1.55 billion in revenue and $0.63 earnings per share, fueled primarily by AI-data-center demand.
Despite a dip in automotive chip sales, ON Semi’s success illustrates how semiconductor firms are adapting to the AI era pivoting from cyclical automotive dependence toward scalable AI infrastructure solutions.

As global EV production stabilizes, the race to build efficient, low-power AI chips is redefining market leadership across the semiconductor landscape.

NTT Launches Dedicated Mobility Subsidiary

Japanese telecom giant NTT announced the formation of NTT Mobility, Inc., a new subsidiary launching in December 2025 to lead its expansion into connected vehicles and smart transportation ecosystems.

By leveraging its telecom infrastructure, NTT aims to integrate 5G, real-time telematics, and data analytics into intelligent mobility systems. This strategic move strengthens Japan’s foothold in the emerging Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) sector, bridging the gap between communications networks and autonomous vehicles.

Waymo Expands Robotaxi Operations Across the U.S.

Alphabet’s autonomous driving arm, Waymo, is scaling its robotaxi fleet to Las Vegas, San Diego, and Detroit, with public service expected in 2026.

Already operational in Phoenix and San Francisco, this expansion signals growing regulatory and consumer readiness for fully driverless transportation. As competitors like Cruise, Baidu Apollo, and WeRide advance globally, Waymo’s expansion cements its role as a pioneer in the commercialization of robotaxi mobility.

The Road Ahead

From WeRide’s Hong Kong IPO to Waymo’s city expansions, from NTT’s mobility pivot to ON Semi’s AI-driven growth one message is clear:
AI isn’t just transforming vehicles it’s redefining mobility itself.

As industries converge around autonomy, connectivity, and intelligence, 2026 may well become the year when smart mobility becomes standard mobility.
